Arvilla Beatrice Barnett McArthur (1923-2002) was a native of Buxton, North Carolina. McArthur was instrumental in gathering the recorded history and genealogy of the Cape Hatteras region. She also co-founded the Hatteras Island Genealogical and Historical Society. This collection primarily consists of genealogical information about Hatteras Island families, with some information about Ocracoke Island families. The material includes copies of birth records, death records, marriage licenses, obituaries, and census records, as well as family histories, cemetery records, and historical information pertinent to Hatteras Island.

This collection primarily consists of genealogical information about Hatteras Island families, with some information about Ocracoke Island families. The collection also includes family histories for several Hatteras Island family names, such as Farrow, Fulcher, Jennette, and Dailey. In addition to the genealogical information, there is also material on various aspects of Hatteras Island history, such as Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the United States Lifesaving Service, shipwrecks, and local men who served in the military during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Biographical/Historical
Arvill Beatrice Barnett McArthur (1923-2002) was born in Buxton, North Carolina to
Joseph D. and Arvilla Credle Barnett. She was a schoolteacher on Maryland's Eastern
Shore. She married Arthur Lee McArthur, III of Cordele, Georgia in 1944 and had four
children. McArthur lived and raised her family in North Carolina, living in Durham,
Charlotte, Cramerton, and Greensboro. She and her husband retired to Buxton where
she opened the Whatz-It Shop and taught needlework handicrafts. Research was one of
McArthur's greatest passions, and she was instrumental in gathering the recorded history
and genealogy of the Cape Hatteras region. She also co-founded the Hatteras Island
Genealogical and Historical Society. She is a direct descendent of six Cape Hatteras
Lighthouse keepers.
