    The Miller family of Hatteras Island, North Carolina can trace its family back nine generations, beginning with Thomas Miller (b. 1785) who left his son Thomas, Jr. 50 acres on Hatteras Banks. The family has a long association with the U. S. Lighthouse Service and the U. S. Lifesaving Service. Baxter B. Miller was awarded both the silver and gold medals for lifesaving and H. S. Miller was awarded the silver.
