    Collection Overview

    Milford Josephus Baum (1906-2006) was the son of Lloyd Curtis and Annie Frost Baum of Poplar Branch, North Carolina. Milford Baum served in the U. S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his discharge in 1946, Baum went to work with the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A & P), eventually becoming vice-president of the A & P Produce Division, middle west division. He retired in 1966, he returned to Currituck County, settling in Aydlett, where he operated a farm that he refered to as "Baum Shelter." He was also a member of the Currituck County Planning Board. An aviation enthusiast, he later became President of the First Flight Society and was instrumental in the planning of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Wright brothers first flight.

    This collection contains materials related to the Baum family, as well as the First Flight Society and the 75th Anniversary of the First Flight Celebration. Included in the collection is correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs.
