Collection Overview
The Wilbur Wright Hotel Register documents guests staying at the hotel during the first five years of its operation, 1939-1944. The register lists guests and visitors to the Wilbur Wright Hotel, giving each person's name, home address, room number, and date and time of arrival and departure.
Biographical/Historical
The Wilbur Wright Hotel was one of the early hotels on the Outer Banks oceanfront built in the vicinity of the Wright Brothers Memorial. It was built by Thomas A. Baum, who operated a ferry service from Kitty Hawk to Point Harbor. The hotel featured the First Flight Dining Room, which served over 1,000 people during the summer season. Recreational and children's activities were available for guests. Baum's daughter, Diane Baum St. Clair, eventually took over management of the hotel and opened an adjacent facility, which she called the Orville Wright Motor Lodge. The Wilbur Wright Hotel was destroyed by a waterspout in 1978. St. Clair renamed the remaining building the Orville and Wilbur Wright Motor Lodge and eventually sold it. As of 2021, the hotel still operates as part of the Days Inn by Wyndham in Kill Devil Hills.
