Biographical/Historical

Helen Vane Steer was born in Manchester, England, 20 May 1926 to Dorothy Alice (Rice) Steer and Charles Burrell Steer. She considered herself to be American and naturalized British. She attended numerous elementary and high schools throughout the United States, England, and Bermuda, before attending Louisiana State University and receiving a B.A. in 1954 and an M.A. in 1958. She became a theatre professor and director, first at Louisiana State and then at Howard College. In 1963, she joined the faculty at East Carolina University, where she remained until her retirement in 1988. In 1985, she was hired as a dialect coach for that season's production of The Lost Colony, in the hopes that she could cultivate a more authentic English accent in the actors' presentations. She died 14 August 2001.
