Collection Overview

The letters in this collection were written to the staff of The Daily Dolphin during the first year of its publication. Most letters are addressed to the newspaper's editor, Rocky Midgette. The first few letters (dated December 1986) were sent by College of the Albemarle faculty and staff congratulating the Daily Dolphin staff on publishing the first issue of the newspaper. Several letters were written by Betty Jean Dupree of Florence, Alabama, who discovered the newspaper while living temporarily in Manteo. Dupree frequently includes poems with her letters. One critical letter, 3 June 1987, was written by a local gas station owner in response to an article complaining about the high cost of gas on the Outer Banks (Midgette responded to this letter in the June 1987 issue of the paper). Many of the letters in this collection were printed in the "Letters to the Editor" column of the June 1987 issue of The Daily Dolphin.

Biographical/Historical

The Daily Dolphin was a student-led newspaper published by the College of the Albemarle's Dare County Center (located in Manteo, N.C.). The paper's editor was local resident Rocky Midgette, and articles were contributed by several College of the Albemarle students and community members, such as Sarah Spink Downing, Arty Tillett, Christopher Smith, and others, many of whom were also Daily Dolphin staff members. The college published at least five issues between December 1986 and June 1987. The paper contained local interest articles, school news, political and religious opinion pieces, photographs, and local advertisements. It is unclear whether the paper continued to be published after the June 1987 issue; no additional issues or letters to the editor referencing further issues have survived, and Midgette appears to have transferred to Amherst College in Massachusetts for the 1987-1988 school year.
