Collection Overview

The Fred Fearing Papers, 1906-2006 and undated, primarily consists of material collected by Fearing while researching the history of eastern North Carolina, with a particular focus on Elizabeth City and the Outer Banks. The collection originally existed as 26 scrapbooks and photograph albums that were disassembled in the course of processing the collection. Fearing's papers comprise subject files on various local history topics (primarily consisting of clippings and Fearing's handwritten notes on the subject) and, to a lesser extent, correspondence and other personal papers. Most of the papers are photocopies rather than original sources, and many folders contain reproductions of materials originally dating from the 19th century.

A significant portion of the collection consists of photographs collected by Fearing related to Elizabeth City and Outer Banks history. Like Fearing's papers, his photographs are largely modern reproductions of 19th- and early 20th-century images. However, there are some original early photographs in the collection, especially relating to Fearing's family. Of note in the collection is significant documentation of sports (baseball and football) in Elizabeth City, in which Fearing participated and was particularly interested.

Arrangement Note

The collection is arranged into two series: Papers and Photographs. Folders are arranged alphabetically within each series.

Biographical/Historical

Frederick Lumsden "Fred" Fearing was born in Elizabeth City in 1914 to Gertrude Evans Fearing (1891-1970) and Enoch Pratt Fearing (1882-1952). Fearing had a passion for baseball and coached the local baseball team, the Elizabeth City Red Men, for fifteen years. He worked as a postal carrier in Elizabeth City, which provided him with a knowledge of the town and its structures, both residential and commercial. Eventually, Fearing became widely regarded and respected for his knowledge of local history, and he served as Elizabeth City's unofficial tour guide. He was also known for collecting historical artifacts, many of which now reside at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.

In 1983, Fearing and his friend, Joe Kramer, decided to organize an impromptu wine and cheese reception for visiting boaters arriving at the Elizabeth City docks on the Intracoastal Waterway. During this reception, he also clipped several roses and presented them to the women boaters as they arrived at the docks. These receptions became a regular occurrence, and Fearing, Kramer, and the other locals who participated came to be known as the "Rose Buddies."

Fearing was involved with the development of Mariner's Wharf and the revitalization of the Elizabeth City harborside. He was a strong supporter of the Museum of the Albemarle. In 1997, Governor Hunt presented him with the Order of the Long-Leaf Pine. He was also an inaugural member of the Louisburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. Fearing passed away 19 October 2007 at Albemarle Hospital at the age of 93.
