Collection Overview

The Ephemera Collection, 1798-2019 and undated, contains ephemera (printed documents, created for a specific, limited purpose, and generally designed to be discarded after use) primarily related to the state of North Carolina and its counties. The largest portion of the collection documents Dare County and its organizations, businesses, and events. Materials in this collection include brochures, pamphlets, flyers, event programs, posters, articles and clippings, circulars, campaign flyers, memorabilia, reports, and other printed material documenting the state of North Carolina from the mid-19th century to the present.

The Ephemera Collection is arranged into four series: North Carolina Counties, 1798-2019 and undated; State of North Carolina, 1825-2016 and undated; University of North Carolina System, 1857-2010; and United States, 1932-2016.

Arrangement Note

The Ephemera Collection is arranged into four series: North Carolina Counties, 1798-2019 and undated; State of North Carolina, 1825-2016 and undated; University of North Carolina System, 1857-2010; and United States, 1932-2016. The first two series are further divided into subseries.

Biographical/Historical

The Ephemera Collection was assembled over a period of several decades by Outer Banks History Center staff. Materials in the collection dating prior to the 1990s appear to have been collected primarily by David Stick, while materials from more recent decades were collected and added by individual Outer Banks History Center staff members. The collection primarily documents the history of Dare County and the State of North Carolina. Several notable Dare County organizations (such as the Roanoke Island Historical Association), events (such as the Pirates Jamboree and commemorations of the Wright Brothers' first flight), businesses (such as hotels, restaurants, and retail stores), and other entities are documented in the collection. The collection especially focuses on the tourism industry in North Carolina, both on and along the North Carolina Coast and throughout the state. Additionally, the collection includes historical materials relating to the University of North Carolina System and materials created by national and federal entities, such as the United States Coast Guard.

4. United States, 1932-2016

Scope and Content:

This series contains materials created by national and federal organizations, as well as material related to the state of Virginia. Materials primarily consist of pamphlets, brochures, published reports, public notices, and form letters. Most of the materials in this series relate directly or indirectly to the North Carolina coastal region. The first two folders in the series document a proposed plan by Mobile Oil Company to conduct offshore drilling off the coast of North Carolina in the early 1990s. The United States Postal Service Commemorative Postage primarily commemorates significant events in coastal North Carolina history, such as the birth of Virginia Dare and the Wright Brothers' first flight.
