Mary Gaddy Hook and Le Hook Papers, PC.5296

Abstract

This collection documents the experience of Mary Gaddy Hook and her husband Le Hook while participating in The Lost Colony during the 1970s and early 1980s, including the extraordinary effort made to get the production ready, run it through the summer and still perform in numerous choir, dance, and theatrical productions on the side. Of note in this collection are several images of performers donning their costumes and a night-by-night description of the run of the show written by one of the performers.

Collection Overview

The collection contains a variety of administrative papers directly connected to The Lost Colony production, as well as programs from ancillary children's theatre and Professional Theatre Workshop productions and realia related to the show, such as a wooden doll once sold in the craft shop and paper fans distributed to the audience to create a breeze and help keep the mosquitoes at bay.

Photographs document the show's production, particularly the tremendous effort behind the scenes to get the show up and running each year. Of note are photographs of the costumers with Irene Rains, the much-loved Lost Colony costumer from 1938 to 1984.
Along with photographs of the Irene Rains Costume Shop dedication are images of alumni reunions, backstage scenes, actors in costume, and after-hours activities.

An even more intimate look at the production can be found in Don Bridge's "Journal," a night by night description of the show's 2003 run sharing the excitement of an actor returning home through the draining heat of summer turning back to enthusiasm as the show wends toward the end of the season.

A group of 174 contemporaneous postcards is also included the collection. Topics cover most tourist attractions on the Outer Banks: The Lost Colony, The Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival Park, Manteo, Lighthouses, nature and beach scenes.

Biographical/Historical

Mary Gaddy was a costume assistant under costumer Irene Smart Rains for the production of Paul Green's symphonic drama, The Lost Colony, from 1974 to 1979. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1976 with a double major in religion and drama. After marrying Le Hook, she returned as assistant costumer for the 1980 and 1982 seasons.

In the summer of 1978, the Lost Colony added itinerant carpenter and former teacher Le Hook as master carpenter to their technical staff. Le was a graduate of Western Illinois University with a major in social studies and a minor in speech and drama. He acquired his master's degree in Education in 1974 from Eastern Illinois University with a minor in technical theatre.

After working together backstage at The Lost Colony in 1978 ,they both worked at Virginia Museum Theatre (VMT) in Richmond, Virginia that winter and got married in the spring of 1979. For the next three years they alternated between The Lost Colony in the summer and VMT in the winter. They served as housing managers for The Lost Colony during the 1979 and 1980 summers at the company's apartment complex known as Morrison Grove. Mary Gaddy Hook, as she was now known, also worked part-time for several summers at the Christmas Shop in Manteo, North Carolina.

After leaving The Lost Colony Le and Mary worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for several years. During this time, they had two sons, David and Jimmy. Nineteen years later, Le was offered a job at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, Alabama and they moved again.

In August of 2012, with David grown, Mary, Le, and Jimmy returned to Manteo. Mary's health began to fail, but she still tried out at local auditions for The Lost Colony. Mary passed away in May 2014. As of 2019, Le is a semi-retired substitute teacher who also performs as Santa Claus each year for area children and is an active Lost Colony alumnus.
