Abstract
Barbara Snowden is a Currituck County resident, historian, and former educator who
has been active in Currituck County and eastern North Carolina since moving to the
area in 1967. Snowden's papers document developments in Currituck County in the latter
half of the 20th century. Materials include brochures, articles, clippings, event
flyers and programs, form letters, political circulars, and information on infrastructure
in Currituck County, including roads and water systems.

Collection Overview
The Barbara Snowden Papers, 1955-1985 and undated, consists of eight folders of material documenting developments in Currituck County in the latter half of the 20th century. Materials include brochures, articles, clippings, event flyers and programs, form letters, political circulars, and information on infrastructure in Currituck County, including roads and water systems. Many of the items were created by women's groups or focus on women's issues; for instance, a 1980 flyer advocating against the Equal Rights Amendment is included in the collection.

Biographical/Historical
Barbara Snowden is a Currituck County resident, historian, and former educator. She came to Currituck County to teach school in 1967 after graduating from Mars Hill University with a history degree and East Carolina University with a master's degree in education and certificate in public history. Since then, she has been active in the Currituck County community and has served on the North Carolina Historical Commission, North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee, North Carolina Maritime Council, Currituck Historic Preservation Commission, and other committees and councils. She assisted with the development of the Currituck Maritime Museum in Historic Corolla Park and helped organize the 350th anniversary celebrations for the historic County of Albemarle (now known as the Albemarle Region) in 2018. As of 2021, she still lives in Currituck County and is active in the local community.
