Biographical/Historical
Skyco was a small village on the southwest end of Roanoke Island. The name "Skyco" refers to an Indigenous man who supposedly lived in the area during the time of England's first colonization attempts in the 1580s. The village was originally known as Ashby's Harbor. It was the site of a major Union attack during the Civil War, and it was also a major terminal for steamships transporting goods along the North Carolina coast. In 1892, a post office was established there, at which point the village was renamed Skyco.
