Biographical/Historical
Little is known about the men mentioned in this deed. The primary subject of the contract may refer to John Howard, a resident of Ocracoke Island, who lived there from 1778 to 1832 and is buried in the Howard-Wahab cemetery. George Read was an officer under Governor John Branch, who served from 1817 to 1820. David Wallace is likely Captain David B. Wallace, Jr. (1763-1827), who lived on Portsmouth Island and defended Ocracoke Island from British invasion during the War of 1812. Nathaniel Pinkham served as a justice of the peace and a representative for Carteret County in the North Carolina General Assembly. The district Howard oversaw as Commissioner of Wrecks is now part of Hyde County and includes Ocracoke Island.
