Collection Overview
This collection consists of research material and other papers accumulated by student
researchers working on a grant-funded project to document the history of the United
States Lifesaving Service on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The bulk of the collection
consists of photocopies of "Articles of Enlistment for Surfmen" for lifesaving stations
on Hatteras Island. These records list the personnel employed by the station each
year, the length of their contract, and often their age, race, and salary. In the
container list below, the dates in parentheses next to each item indicate the years
for which articles of enlistment exist in the collection.
In addition to the articles of enlistment, the collection includes handwritten notes
created by researchers working on the grant project, correspondence related to the
grant, and a handwritten summary/non-verbatim transcript of an interview with Lish
Midgett regarding his time at the Nags Head Coast Guard Station.
Biographical/Historical
The materials in this collection were accumulated in pursuit of a grant-funded research
project to document the history of the United States Lifesaving Service on Hatteras
Island. This research was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities' Youthgrant
program and conducted by three students at the Cape Hatteras School: Danny Couch,
Noah Price, and Shawn Gray. At the end of their research project, the students published
an article in the Winter 1977 issue of the Cape Hatteras School's Sea Chest Magazine,
"A History of the United-States Lifesaving Service on Hatteras Island."
