Collection Overview

The materials in this collection were compiled from scrapbooks created by various members of the Overman family, primarily Missouri Morgan Jackson Overman and Eunice Goodwin Overman. They primarily consist of newspaper clippings, but also included are letters, telegrams, photographs, and other documents. Most materials were photocopied from acidic originals and the originals were discarded or returned to the family. A small number of original items are present in the collection, including a 1931 plat of the Kitty Hawk Beach property of the Wright Memorial Bridge Company, drawn by William Jackson Overman, and a June 1903 edition of the Independent Order of Red Men Journal.

Biographical/Historical

The materials in this collection were created by the Overman family of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Some of the papers were gathered by Missouri Morgan Jackson Overman (1873-1952) who married Charles Elliot Overman (1874-1955) in 1901. Their son, William Jackson Overman (1902-1979), was a civil engineer and the chief engineer for District One of the North Carolina Highway Department. He was involved in the construction of the Camden Causeway connecting Camden and Pasquotank Counties in the 1940s. William married Eunice Goodwin (1903-1997), also of Elizabeth City. Some of the items in this collection relate to Eunice's father, William Benjamin Goodwin (1872-1966), an Elizabeth City mayor and founder of Albemarle Building and Loan Association.
