Abstract

Corporal Howard Kingman Smith was born in 1894 in Savannah, Georgia to William Franklin and Carrie Smith. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 24, 1918 and was stationed at Camp Meade, Maryland before being moved to the U.S. General Hospital in Oteen, North Carolina. Howard's letters to his mother in Georgia were written during his time in Oteen between 1919 and 1921 and describe his life at the hospital and in the mountains.

    Biographical/Historical

    Howard Kingman Smith (1894-1942) was born in Savannah, Georgia to William Franklin Smith, a Methodist preacher, and Carrie Carlos Smith. Howard was one of six children. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 24, 1918 in McRae, Georgia at the age of 24. Howard became ill during his time in the military and was moved to the U.S. General Hospital in Oteen, North Carolina. During his stay at the hospital, he wrote several letters to his mother between the dates of January 1919 and May 1921. He was honorably discharged on February 22, 1920 as 100% disabled with a Service Connected Disability. According to the 1930 census, he was listed as being in the U.S. Veteran's Hospital in Swannanoa, North Carolina. He died in Savannah, Georgia of tuberculosis on March 25, 1942 and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman, Georgia.
