Finding Aid of the Historic Burke Foundation Collection, PC.7045
Abstract
The Historic Burke Foundation, Inc. was created in response to a drive to preserve
the Historic Burke County Courthouse that dates to the 1830s.
Because the formation of HBF preceded the establishment of the History Museum of Burke
County in 2003, many documents and artifacts were donated to HBF and were stored in
the courthouse. In 2021, HBF representatives reached out the Western Regional Archives
for guidance on the disposition of these items.
The Historic Burke Foundation, Inc. Collection consists of 3.75 feet of documents,
chiefly from the Ervin, Pearson, Ray, and Tate families, including correspondence,
financial records, business records, genealogical material, and invitations, dating
from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Biographical/Historical
The Historic Burke Foundation, Inc. was created in response to a drive to preserve
the Historic Burke County Courthouse that dates to the 1830s. The Historical Buildings
Committee of the Morganton Service League initiated the effort in 1978. As the committee
grew in numbers, the non-profit Historic Burke Foundation, Inc. (HBF) was created
in 1982. Additional properties under the care of HBF are the 1812 Captain Charles
McDowell, Jr. House (acquired in 1986), the Quaker Meadows Cemetery (acquired in 1992).
Because the creation of HBF preceded the establishment of the History Museum of Burke
County in 2003, many documents and artifacts were donated to HBF and were stored in
the courthouse. In 2021, HBF representatives reached out the Western Regional Archives
for guidance on the disposition of these items.
