Collection Overview

This collection consists chiefly of business correspondence with lumber wholesalers in North Carolina and Tenneessee, along with some family correspondence.

Biographical/Historical

Joshua W. Whitaker (1850 - 1903) was the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Whitaker of Cherokee County, North Carolina. He grew up in Valleytown with several brothers and sisters. He was of Cherokee heritage and his sons were born in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Whitaker also had two daughters. He returned to Cherokee County where he work in the lumber business trying to secure contracts for poles and pins.

He is buried in Valleytown Cemetery in Cherokee County.
