Biographical/Historical
The American War Mothers organization was established in response to federal officials'
appeal to improve food production and conserve during World War I. Momentum was established
in Indiana, when Alice M. French agreed to rally and organize that state's War Mothers.
The Indiana chapter was incorporated in May 1918, and a convention was held in August
1918. French sent a letter asking that each state send a representative. At that gathering,
the bylaws of the national organization of American War Mothers were adopted. The
organization was later incorporated by an act of Congress on February 24th, 1925.
Initial membership was available to those whose children had served in the military
during WWI, but was later amended to include any American wars.
Over the years, the organization developed traditions to help support their objectives
of helping to care for the wounded and their families, as well as to develop and maintain
a spirit of world service in general. The American War Mothers are a non-political,
non-partisan organization as well as non-profit. The American War Mothers organization
maintains local chapters within state chapters, that fall under the national body.
The North Carolina Chapter was established in 1920. Libby Huntley (1925-2012) served
as both president of the North Carolina Chapter, as well as Asheville Chapter, #20.
