Biographical/Historical

Geneva Gardin (1890-1923) was born in Glenwood, North Carolina. She and Reverend Jesse D. Hunt (1864-1932) began courting in 1912. They exchanged letters from 1912 until their marriage on December 24, 1914. Initially there was concern about the relationship on the Reverend's part because of their 26-year age difference and his teenage daughter from a previous marriage, Mary Sue. Geneva wrote to Jesse consistently about the news from her life and community. The Reverend visited Geneva regularly, consistently giving her gifts. Following their marriage, they moved to Rutherford County, where Jesse worked as a Baptist minister and a principal. They had four children, Jessie Geneva, David Judson, Sarah Belle, and Elizabeth Meldonia. Following the deaths of Geneva and Jesse, their children were raised by their maternal grandparents.

The Halliburton family is descended from Fatima "Fannie" E. Gardin, the sister of Abraham C. Gardin, Geneva's father. She married David Carter Halliburton on October 9, 1860. They had 8 children. The youngest of these children, Eva, married James Haney. Their son, James Lawton Haney, married Sallie Mosteller, and they had James Haney and Anna Haney.

The Gardin, Halliburton, and Haney families have a long history in the Nealsville/Glenwood area of McDowell County. They are descended from Gerhard G. Gerding, a German immigrant. He moved to the area in the late 1700s and he reestablished a mercantile business that he had had in previous years. He married twice. He had five children with his first wife, Mary M. Cansler, and 3 children with his second wife, Maria Finger. His descendants have remained in the area since and continue to influence and document its history and culture.
