Biographical/Historical

The Civilian Conservation Corps, a program developed by the adminsitration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, aimed to combat unemployment and improve American infrastructure and morale. This program was part of Roosevelt's New Deal and helped lift the United States out of the Great Depression. Anthony Troy Elliot of Perquimans County, NC (1914-2002) enrolled in the CCC and was assigned to Camp Redington, Company 424, of Swan Quarter, NC in Hyde County. Camp Redington was located on Rose Bay approximately 12 miles east of Lake Mattamuskeet. Only a few years after Camp Redington was established, Company 424 moved to a site very close to the Lake Mattamuskeet Pump Station. At that point the Camp's name was officially changed to "Lake Mattamuskeet Camp. The bulk of this collection contains photographs from the earlier Camp Redington. It is likely that the move to a site closer to Lake Mattamuskeet was a result of their plans to restore the pump station and transform it into a hunting lodge. This project remains the shining achievement of the CCC in Hyde County. The Lake Mattamuskeet Hunting Lodge operated until 1974. The Civilian Conservation Corps maintained a presence in Hyde County for nine years, at which point the CCC program ended due to World War II.
