Biographical Note

Jesse Helms was born in Monroe, North Carolina on October 18, 1921. He attended both Wingate University and Wake Forest University. His first job was as a sports reporter with the . In 1942 he married Dorothy Coble, who was the society reporter, and enlisted in the Navy during World War II.After leaving the Navy, Helms worked in a variety of fields, including serving as the director of several cerebral palsy hospitals and support organizations; serving on the Board of Trustees of Meredith College, John F. Kennedy College, Campbell University and Wingate College; and working for several news agencies, including WRAL-TV, , and the . By the mid-1960s, Helms was the executive vice president for Capitol Broadcasting in Raleigh. In 1972, he won election as the Republican candidate to the U.S. Senate and was reelected until he retired in 2003.[Biographical note based upon information from The Jesse Helms Center website.]
