Collection Overview

The bulk of the photographs in the collection were taken by Charles A. Farrell between 1925 and 1940 in association with his work as a commercial photographer in Greensboro. Farrell also took a significant number of photographs of coastal North Carolina in the late 1930s. Farrell took many photographs of Onslow County fishermen to document traditional coastal life prior to the construction of Camp Lejeune. Additionally, there are photographs of a Cherokee Indian Fair in the mountains and photographs related to aviation, including pictures of Charles Lindbergh in Greensboro. The collection also contains images captured by Anne McKaughan Farrell during her travels in the state and photographs of McKaughan and Farrell relatives. The collection primarily consists of black and white negatives and prints. The collection also contains a small number of color slides, color prints, tintypes, cartes de visite, and transparencies. The negatives and prints are typically copy negatives and contact prints, as the original nitrate negatives were deteriorating by the time they arrived at the State Archives. Copies were made to preserve the images and the original film was destroyed.

Biographical/Historical note

Charles Anderson Farrell was born in Yadkin County, North Carolina in 1893. After graduating from Wake Forest College, Farrell worked in his father Andrew Jackson Farrell's photography studio in Winston-Salem. Commercial photographer A. J. Farrell also worked for the Reynolds family in Winston Salem, capturing the photograph of the camel that was used for Camel cigarettes advertising. Charles A. Farrell joined the army in 1917 and served during World War I. In 1919, Farrell began working for the Eastman Kodak Company as a technical representative. Farrell married Anne McKaughan on February 5, 1921, and the couple had three children who survived to adulthood; Charles B., Peter S., and Roger H. Farrell. Eastman Kodak sent Farrell to Mexico as a sales representative from 1922 until 1923, when the Farrells relocated to Greensboro. Charles A. Farrell worked for the Greensboro Daily News, and according to his obituary, was the first professional photographer on staff at the newspaper. The Farrells opened a photographic studio and camera and art supply store in Greensboro called The Art Shop. Charles A. Farrell actively participated in the community by giving lectures on photography and color movies and through membership in the Rotary Club and the American Legion. Between 1933 and 1944, Charles Farrell contributed photographs to five books printed by the University of North Carolina Press, including the popular book , the story of a young Afican American boy during the 1930s. In addition, Charles Farrell was an early aerial photographer in North Carolina. Farrell's productivity ended during World War II when he chose to use difficult to obtain photographic supplies to print images for the military stationed in Greensboro rather than for film to take pictures himself. After the war, Farrell underwent surgery and stopped working as a photographer for the remainder of his life.

Anne M. Farrell began capturing photographs in the 1930s, contributing articles and images to magazine. In the early 1940s, Anne Farrell worked with the author of to help prepare images for the book. Later, Mrs. Farrell assisted Ethel Stephens Arnett with the retouching, printing, and reproduction of the illustrations in Arnett's books. Anne M. Farrell purchased The Book Shop in 1943, but sold the store in 1948 to focus on running The Art Shop after her husband's health failed. Anne M. Farrell remained president of The Art Shop until the business was sold in 1960 to Mary Farrell Hedrick, Charles' sister. Charles A. Farrell passed away in March of 1977 and Anne Farrell followed in May of the same year.
