This lantern slide collection was donated to the North Carolina State Archives by Mr. Maurice Toler, North Carolina State University Archives, Raleigh, North Carolina on Aug. 26, 1978; accessioned the Archives on Dec. 12, 1990.

The collection consists of three (3) lantern slides containing views of western North Carolina. One slide made by C. F. Ray, 2 N. Pack Square, Asheville, North Carolina depicts a meeting of the "Corn Club Boys" in Buncombe County, N.C. Another slide by Herbert W. Pelton of Asheville, N.C. shows a view of the base of a large tree in Pisgah National Forest. The caption states that the tree has a circumference of thirty five (35) feet. The third slide depicts sunrise at the summit of Mount Mitchell (elevation 6,711 feet). The photograph, made by Herbert W. Pelton, has a 1911 copyright date.
